The short answer question type in IQRALMS is a powerful tool for educators looking to assess student understanding with precision. This guide walks you through the entire process of setting up and effectively using short answer questions in IQRALMS quizzes and lessons.

Question Set-up:

  1. Step 1: Create the Question:
  2. Category Selection: Start by selecting the appropriate question category within IQRALMS.
  1. Name the Question: Provide a descriptive name of question.
  • Question Text: Use the HTML Editor to craft question text. This editor allows for formatting similar to word processing software, enabling you to add clarity with images or other media.
  1. Step 2: Define Answers and Settings:
  2. Case Sensitivity: Decide if answers should be case-sensitive or not. This setting determines whether “Apple” and “apple” are treated as different answers.
  1. Answer Input: List the acceptable answers.
  • Grading: Assign a grade to each correct answer. IQRALMS allows for partial credit with different grades for different answers.
  • Feedback: Provide feedback for each possible answer. This helps to guide students towards the correct response or explains why their answer was incorrect.
  • Save: Click Save Changes to add the question to the category.

  2. Wildcard Usage: Incorporate asterisks () to accept a range of answers that follow a specified pattern. For example, “raining” could match “raining” or “running”, allowing for flexibility in spelling or phrasing.

Adaptive Quizzing: If using IQRALMS’s adaptive mode in quizzes, where students can attempt questions multiple times, consider applying a penalty factor. This deducts a percentage of the maximum grade with each subsequent attempt, encouraging students to strive for accuracy initially.

  • Feedback for Wrong Answers

Precision in Feedback: Clearly outline the correct answers in the feedback section. Use the wildcard answer with a grade of zero to ensure that any answer not specifically listed as correct is treated uniformly.

  • Simple System: Default option for straightforward matching of student responses with correct answers.
  • Regular Expressions: Advanced system allowing for complex pattern matching in responses, useful for more nuanced assessments.

Character Handling: IQRALMS distinguishes between different apostrophe characters, which is crucial in language-based assessments to ensure accurate grading and avoid unintended errors.
