In a prestigious ceremony held at the Governor House, Karachi, on Sunday, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori conferred the Sitara-e-Imtiaz upon distinguished individuals from various fields. Among those honored was Mr. Hunaid Lakhani (late), Founding Chancellor of Iqra University, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to education, healthcare, and social well-being in Pakistan.
The Sitara-e-Imtiaz, one of the highest civilian awards in Pakistan, was presented to Mr. Lakhani’s mother, Ms. Naheed Lakhani, and his son, Mr.Hamza Lakhani, in acknowledgment of his lifelong dedication to the betterment of society. Mr. Lakhani made significant efforts in transforming Pakistan’s education sector. Under his leadership, the university awarded scholarships to over 66,000 students, offering opportunities to those who might otherwise have been denied access to higher education.
Moreover, his dedication to improving health services is equally remarkable. Mr. Lakhani founded a 500-bed hospital, providing free medical treatment, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative ensured that quality healthcare was available to those in need, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Beyond his work in education and healthcare, Mr. Lakhani was deeply committed to humanitarian causes. He led efforts to assist those affected by natural disasters, building 300 homes for earthquake survivors and offering aid during the devastating floods of 2022.
